The HALDIMAND BIRD OBSERVATORY has held their 15th spring banding of birds at Ruthven, Cayuga and also Rock Point near Dunnville where the Rock Point Banding Station is located. Baillie Birdathon in support of Haldimand Bird Observatory. See www.rockpointbirdbanding.com under the heading Baillie Birdathon which raised $1200.00 which should return about $900.00 to Haldimand. What a marvellous job that all these volunteers are doing. Plan a visit to one of the stations and show your support or donation for all their work or volunteer sometime.

POWDERY MILDEW A PROBLEM?

This is a common disease of roses, phlox, monarda, etc. Reduce the risk of this and other diseases by giving your plants plenty of room to grow in a sunny location.
Recipe; 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon insecticidal soap (or 1 t dish soap) in gallon of water. Apply at first sign of disease and repeat weekly through the season.

Another great tip from Dennis Fallat is 1 part milk to 7 parts water to control mildew on roses…

For slugs and snails, buy dog flea and tick shampoo. Mix with water and spray on any plants to control chewing insects.

Plan to attend OUR SOCIETY’S POT LUCK SUPPER ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 21ST open to all members. We will have a bountiful display of different foods at our pot luck supper starting at 6:00 p.m. Just bring whatever dish that you prefer. We have employed ladies in the kitchen to help serve and clean up afterwards and serve tea and coffee. Sit down and enjoy lots of assorted desserts after a fantastic meal that have been brought in by various members.

SPECIAL SPEAKER WILL BE DENNIS FALLAT who we all enjoyed so much last year. What a great speaker so full of interesting garden advice. Be sure to have a pen and pencil handy for all his advice, and also to ask questions from this very knowledgeable man.

Kim Christoff in charge of trillium awards will speak on our 15 new trillium award winners and our 2 business awards certificates who are also invited to our Pot Luck Supper and which we hope will purchase a membership into our Society at the cost of $10.00 per person. The main amount of money we receive each year is from the Ontario Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the more members that we have makes for a larger grant. The money received helps us to buy the Trillium casts, have great speakers at our meetings, we also did a great makeover on the Anchor in Wingfield park last year, plant flowers at Floral Clock, in front of Royal Sub on Broad Street and throughout the town of Dunnville. Established a new water fountain at the corner of Lock and Main streets, have a GARDEN TOUR (with free FREE BBQ later), and a great Plant Sale in May. There will be no “Ways and Means” draw but instead we will hold a 50/50 DRAW, tickets cost $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 and Mary McKinny will be in charge of this. Buy a ticket and help support our Society! Look for Don Davis, greeting everyone at the door with his pet 6-year-old green winged macaw, Luna., who just loves to socialize and meet people. The elevator will also be available so you won’t have to climb any stairs. Be sure to attend this festive night and friendly get together!

Congratulations to our new treasurer of the Dunnville Horticultural Society Kim Christoff!

Next executive meeting will be Thursday September 9th at 7:00 p.m. at Dunnville Chamber of Commerce
